Carbon Farming and Its Impact on Agricultural Technology

The agricultural sector is responsible for a large share of anthropogenic greenhouse gases. At the same time, methods such as targeted land use change can reduce emissions from landscape elements and sequester carbon from the atmosphere in the soil. This process, also known as carbon farming, has not been uniformly defined, and faces challenges regarding establishing new requirments for agricultural vehicles and technology, creating profitable business models (that preclude “greenwashing”), and developing governmental frameworks and industry acceptance. Carbon Farming and Its Impact on Agricultural Technology discusses the large development gap for carbon farming methods, especially with regard to agricultural technology. In addition to the new hardware requirements arising from land use change, there is also a need for the further development of software.

The SAE and ISO groups have cooperated to define agricultural and forestry networks in a manner to allow compatibility of ECUs and messaging protocols between agricultural and forestry ISO 11783 networks and truck and bus SAE J1939 networks.

Scaled Hardware in the Loop Simulation of the Electric Motors of a CVT for Agricultural Tractors

Electrification is a very current topic for all the mobile machinery whose primary source of power is an internal combustion engine; among those the light weight passenger vehicles represent the first field of application of this trend and also the state of the art of the technology. Agriculture is a huge fuel consumer sector and for this reason the tractor industry is now working on electrification, proposing different approaches for different power sizes: the “Battery Electric Vehicle” topology is proposed for small and mid-power size tractors, while for the big ones various hybrid architectures couple the internal combustion engine to electric units. In this paper a reference tractor is considered, endowed with an input coupled hydro-mechanical Continuously Variable Transmission and an alternative compound architecture is proposed, which provides the same performances and it is more suitable for electrification.

Holistic Process-Oriented Approach to Test Bench Control for Mobile Machines

The requirements for modern drivetrains are increasing across all industries. Even mobile working machines such as agricultural and construction machinery are subject to increasingly higher demands in terms of efficiency and CO2 emissions. To verify these requirements and drive further development, it is necessary for testing processes to comprehensively evaluate the machine and its operational processes. For this purpose, the MOBiL testing approach was developed at the Institute of Mobile Machines. This approach incorporates parallel drivetrains, information flow and the environment of the driving and working task. To implement this approach in a complete vehicle testbench, a framework was developed that enables fully individual driving and working tasks of a mobile working machine to be replicated on a test bench. The basis for this framework is the Robot Operating System (ROS), which runs various nodes.

Renewable Alternatives for Fossil Fuels in Non-Road Mobile Machinery: A Multicriteria Analysis

Non-Road Mobile Machinery (NRMM) incorporates a wide variety of machines not intended for the transport of passengers or goods on the road. This includes small gardening equipment, construction, mining, agricultural, and forestry machinery up to locomotives and inland waterway vessels, mostly using an internal combustion engine. NRMM was often overlooked and neglected in the past when considering pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions. Due to their high diversity, they are hard to categorize, resulting in a lack of available data. As emissions from road transport are being tackled by regulations, the emissions of NRMM become an increasing part of total transport emissions. An alternative to fossil fuels will be required for the energy supply of NRMM to fully commit to the CO2 reduction goals, and to fulfil the future requirements of legislators and public opinion.

Durable Icephobic and Erosion Resistant Coatings Based on Quasicrystals

Quasicrystalline (QC) coatings were evaluated as leading-edge protection materials for rotor craft blades. The QC coatings were deposited using high velocity oxy-fuel thermal spray and predominantly Al-based compositions. Ice adhesion, interfacial toughness with ice, wettability, topography, and durability were assessed. QC-coated sand-blasted carbon steel exhibited better performance in terms of low surface roughness (Sa ~ 0.2 μm), liquid repellency (water contact angles: θadv ~85°, θrec ~23°), and better substrate adhesion compared to stainless steel substrates. To enhance coating performance, QC-coated sand-blasted carbon steel was further exposed to grinding and polishing, followed by measuring surface roughness, wettability, and ice adhesion strength. This reduced the surface roughness of the QC coating by 75%, resulting in lower ice adhesion strengths similar to previously reported values (~400 kPa).

Drop-in replacement biofuels and electrofuels can provide net-zero CO2 emissions with dramatic reductions in contrail formation. Biofuels must transition to second-generation cellulosic feedstocks while improving land and soil management. Electrofuels, or "e-fuels,” require aggressive cost reduction in hydrogen production, carbon capture, and fuel synthesis. Hydrogen has great potential for energy efficiency, cost reduction, and emissions reduction; however, its low density (even in liquid form) combined with it’s extremely low boiling temperature mean that bulky spherical tanks will consume considerable fuselage volume. Still, emerging direct-kerosene fuel cells may ultimately provide a superior zero-emission, energy-dense solution. Decarbonized Power Options for Civil Aviation discusses the current challenges with these power options and explores the economic incentives and levers vital to decarbonization.

The main objective of this study is, improving the torsional fatigue life in front axle spindle shaft by modifying the spline design and optimizing induction hardening heat treatment process in such a way that the other part of the system will have a minor or no design change. It helps us to reduce the part count variability, lower manufacturing cost and development time.

Prediction, Validation, and Improvement of Panel Sound Transmission Loss of Agricultural Equipment Cab

A typical cab used on agriculture machines is made up of a metal frame structure with large enclosing panels of glass, plastic, and metal. Acoustic treatments such as coatings, textiles and foams are used within the cab for aesthetics but also to mediate undesired noise. To develop effective designs for the cab to combat noise, accurate tools for measurement, and predictive methods for sound transmission loss are needed. This paper focuses on Sound Transmission Loss (STL) of the rear upper panel of a cab used in agriculture machines. Results from CAE based tools such as Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA), Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Hybrid FE-SEA methods are compared to measurements. The panel studied included features such as curvature, deep drawn beads with a glass window and a damping coating. The simulation results are refined by incorporating methods for accurate modeling of ribs stiffness, curvature effect and radiation efficiency by synthetic modal approach.
